I am trying to load (from scratch) a CPU6_2 with the "e25041h" version of Linux via the Pc Installer software. They told me it was easy but as usual nothing is that easy wirh Alcatel!! The Cpu manages a DHCP request and tries to start loading yet stops with an error saying:
Unable to retreive the second stage ram disk. Check your FTPserver configuration.
First of all, does anyone know the correct procedure as it has changed somewhat from the previous unix versions? Help very much appreciated.

hi !
The best way usually is to have a cable going from the PC to the CBRMA box, or even better: Connect the CBRMA box to a mini HUB (a dumb hub), and connect your laptop to the hub.
2nd, give your PC a static ip address
3rd, read the documentation: from what i remember, you have to boot the switch, stop the boot process, boot from the network, and it should go through.

Loaded exactly the same release as yours from scratch a few times - without any problem.
Your error says "second stage ram" - that means that linux.ram was loaded successfully?
If so check whether you have C:\BOOTP\linux\18.0\install\distrib\base\stage2.img file.
Read also files in
C:\Program Files\Alcatel\OmniPCX Enterprise PC Installer\var\log
directory - they are log files for PC installer.
Also do check TechComms 548(Ed.2) and 561.

Thanks for your reply. The last sentence describes it all - IT SHOULD WORK!!!! but it don't. I have connected as you described and followed the very dry instructions Alcatel attached to the PC installer. The switch starts booting and requests an Ip - all's well. Then it starts looking for the download file - sometimes it gets that far. Then it stops on the error I mentioned before. I'm not sure if my download package (dhs3mgr) is packed up properly, ie all the files in the right folder. I merged the files (after download from BPWS) as they come so that should be correct. More than that I do not know. I do have a doc showing ny set-up and errors if that may help you. Thanks.
Re: 4400 loading
Do you mean that it stops at different phases?patmul39 wrote:....sometimes it gets that far. ...
Do you connect PC directly to CPU - without a hub?
What mode your PC network card is?
If it is in Autodetect for speed and duplex mode then try to set it to 10Mbs and Hal-Duplex mode.
This trick did work for me.PC network card was in Autodetect, i.e 100Mbs and FullDuplex. In BOOTP log I saw that CPU sent BOOTP requests and PC responded but they did not "hear" each other.

Hi Alex, I do have the file you mentioned but it is located as follows:
C:\dhs3mgr\e2504\pcmao\boot_res\bootp\linux\18.0\install\distrib\base\stage2.img
I think that the folders I have are not located correctly, ie should the bootp folder be on the c: as it was with the 4400 unix loading and not as I have it shown above? I can send you a picture of my layout.

Re: 4400 loading
Sorry, i did not mention that i used win98 for loading. It uses the same directory structure as before. If you use Win2000 then it does not matter - bootp uses a shortcut to needed directory.patmul39 wrote:Hi Alex, I do have the file you mentioned but it is located as follows:

What I found in log file on Win2K machine :

OK.So you do not have ...\linux\18.0\... directory? What you have in syslog.txt for stage2.img?What if you create 18.0\install\distrib\base directory and copy contents of \18.0_18.1\install\distrib\base there?

No but I do have a shortcut for 18.0 pointing to that folder (18.0_18.1). Also the following is what I have in the syslog.txt:
