DHCP Discover Process

Post by bugmenot2 »

Hi there. we have IPtouch phones and PCs sharing the network port. Phones on VLAN 8, PCs on VLAN 100. Many of the phones have not been manually configured for VLAN tagging. We plan to use Option 43 to configure the phone automagically.

I would like to understand if during the DHCP discover process where the IPTOUCH gets Options 43 info from our win2003 DHCP server, will it occupy an IP lease in the native VLAN (100) for the duration of the lease.

My understanding is the phone will
Discover the DHCP Server
Request/Offer/Accept an IP lease
Configure VLAN tagging based on Option 43 parms.
Reboot into VLAN 8

If this is true i would expect the iptouch to own a lease in vlan 100 for the lease duration and also own a lease from VLAN 8.

I understand this wont impact the handset performance as it will only have one active IP configure, VLAN 8. However i want to carefully manage the DHCP scope.

thanks
pierok

yes it will have a lease in vlan 100. so you'll have to put a short time or have a big range in your vlan 100.
