IAP's vs. CAP's & converting

Post by JPDearing55 »

Got a question about Access Points. The Alcatel AP's are rebranded Aruba's, correct? That certainly seems to be the case.

Aruba offers two different "styles" of AP's. Instant AP's and Campus AP's. Instant AP are controller-less and use a virtual controller inside the AP itself and the Campus models use a centralized mobility controller for larger deployments. You can specify which "flavor" you want when ordering them and an IAP can be converted to a CAP at some later date. There is apparently no difference in price either, IAP vs. CAP.

My question is, can a Campus AP be converted to an Instant AP if it was never ordered as an IAP in the first place. It's OK if it's not something that's "officially" supported but if you know of a way to do it, could you share how?

If it's simply not possible, I underdstand but it seems odd to me that Aruba would have two otherwise identical pieces of hardware and not have some method of switching from one to the other. Some kind of firmware change??

Thank you!

At Alcatel like at Aruba: If you have an Campus AP (f.e. AP92 or AP105) than there is no chance to convert to instant. Newer RAP are delivered as instant (RAP3, RAP155...).

Thanks Silvio. I appreciate your reply.

I was hoping that someone out there knew of a "trick" to force IAP firmware into a regular AP. Some kind of special trick at bootup... Oh well, nothing ventured, nothing gained.....

Hi John,
IAP to CAP is possible. But I have in your first question understand that you want to use a Campus AP as an IAP.
