vMotion- transferring Virtual Machines kills Network

Post by devnull »

disclaimer: I am no Windows/VmWare admin, so just the network guy.

On a Alcatel Network (Cores 9800) and some Stacks are VMWare ESXi Servers connected.
In an event of transferring Virtual Machines using vMotion the network comes to a halt, as every port/uplink transporting the vMotion VLAN is at 100%.

Are there any special configurations (in VMWare or on the switches) needed?

I noticed that
"show ip traffic"
show lots of "ip destination errors"
show ip traffic
#########################################

Datagrams received
Total = 138444587,
IP header error = 0,
Destination IP error = 34121883,
Unknown protocol = 0,
Local discards = 0,
Delivered to users = 104178685,
Reassemble needed = 0,
Reassembled = 0,
Reassemble failed = 0
So what are you guys configuring for esxi?

Have vMotion separated from the vlan needed for victual machines using different physical interface for vMotion.

Also I believe that the team in charge of virtual infrastructure can limit the maximum bandwidth the vMotion will take. I _don't_know_ but I vaguely remember seeing that somewhere. You could maybe also do this yourself but I believe it would be better it this limitation comes from inside the VMware.
