log onto 9 series

Hi guy's, I'm hoping someone can put my mind at ease. I seem to remember in the back of my mind that it is possible to connect to a 40x9 phone and see version/phone type etc.
I know how to do it with 40x8 phones. this is usefull if the phone is not the same as programed. I log onto the phone and check type (a, b, c etc) then correct in the database so as to stop the incidents. I am wanting to do the same for 9 series and am sure it was possible. The only way I do it at present is to wait until I can get hold of the user and ask them what the type of phone they are using is.
