I tried installing OTUC a few weeks ago. Here are the steps that caused the problem (from the OTUC documentation provided by Alcatel-Lucent):
2. Operations on the Red Hat Installation DVD-ROM
Once the Red Hat Enterprise Linux DVD-ROM is in the drive, select OK with your keyboard and press the Enter key to validate
The system displays a request for installation number dialog box
Enter the installation number provided by Red Hat and click OK
The problem is that while we purchased the copy of Red Hat Linux from Alcatel-Lucent, it did not come with an "installation number."
OK, no problem so far. However, the official documentation continues...
20. Once this is done, press the Enter key
You are now connected as root
If upgrades are available on the boot CD-ROM, the system requests the boot CD-ROM again.
In all cases, it is recommended to connect this machine to the Red Hat Network (RHN) so as to get updates and bug fixes automatically.
The problem is that without the Installation Number, you cannot connect to the Red Hat network and do the updates requested. I submitted a trouble ticket with Alcatel-Lucent, and the answer I got back said that you don't need the Installation Number. I can even see why they might like to have a specific version of Linux, which updates could change. However, the problem is that this is their offficial documentation, and you can't seem to complete the steps as listed.
Plus, I could go to Red Hat and download an evaluation version of the software for free, since what you pay for with the license is the ability to update the software. Yes, I realize that you need the Alcatel-Lucent boot disk to properly configure the Linux installation, but if that is what I'm purchasing by buying Linux from Alcatel-Lucent, then they should say so, and not charge full price for the actual copy of Linux. I talked to support at Red Hat and they didn't know anything about the arrangement between A-L and RH, and they couldn't provide an installation number.
Eventually, someone at A-L got tired of me complaining about this and sent me a copy of an Installation Number that I could use to shut me up, but it was a photocopy of one, and I suspect this is not the normal procedure. To my way of thinking, if they are selling my customer a full copy of Linux that they are paying full price for, they need to step up to the plate and have a process for issuing Installation Numbers, or have an arrangement with Red Hat to do so. To me, something is fishy if they are charging for something that I could get for free online--if they are not passing along the vendor benefits of paying for the software (updates).
Just wondered if anyone else had this problem, and how they resolved it.
Problem installing OTUC
Read TC1318.
ALU uses new licencing model.
If your OTUC was delivered before 1st of January, 2010 then you should get a paper with Rad Hat license.
ALU uses new licencing model.
Starting from January 1st, 2010 no license key is needed anymore. This is the change Alcatel-
Lucent recently agreed with Red Hat.
Indeed, as per our OEM agreement with Red Hat, Alcatel-Lucent is authorized to distribute Red
Hat Operating System integrated into Alcatel-Lucent Products.

If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck.
Skipp the license step during the installation ore do an request on boot-CD 22. Same with the update, do not connect to Red Hat network for updates.
You may then have problem with Otuc services after the updates. Thats WHY the boot-CD and the software is specified with an special Red Hat version and update.
Alcatel-Lucent have during the last two year been following the Red Hat version for Otuc more frequent then before.
Now the problem is with Teamwork, but because this software and root is closed in Teamwork you will not have the same problem until you notice it trying to load the Teamwork on an to new hardware (drivers problem)
Best regards Daniel

So why aren't the docs updated?
All that is well and fine, but why do the docs still state to use the Installation Number? It has been six months, and I quoted from the official docs online as they currently exist. The installation was done after January 1st, and no one in the support chain was able to provide any feedback about why no number was provided.
I did mention that I could understand why they wouldn't want updates to be performed, but if that is the case, my complaint is that they should update their docs to match their expectations. And if they are going to charge full price for the software, they should provide the support that the customer has provided.
