VLAN assignment for IP handsets on Cisco LAN

Post by stephenfirth »

New to the Alcatel world. Just wondering the registration process for handsets on a Cisco LAN with CDP & LLDP using a corporate DHCP service (QIP). I understand the Ciso method and the Nortel method, but really don't have a clue about the Alcatel method. Where can I get the info?

The Alcatel IP phones and equipment can be hard coded on the devices themselves for which VLAN they will belong to, your DHCP server can handle the VLAN assignments, or the Alcatel DHCP service can be turned on in the CPU and the Ethernet switch ports can be tagged for the correct VLAN.

Hello stephen !

If you seek on the R9 documentation, you will see Automatic Vlan Assignment (AVA). It is use to assign VLAN on handset automaticly when you use DHCP service (directly with the call server or using an external server).
First of all, the handset will send a DHCP discover (broadcast), then the call server will answer with a VLAN ID.
Second time, the handset will reboot and re-send a DHCP discover (but he keeps the VLAN ID) and the call server will reply with an IP adress for the device.
All is write on R9.0 documentation.

Yes, you can use the AVA feature also. I tried using this in 6.0 or 7.0 but couldn't get it to work. I haven't tried it since then.

Thanks for this information. Our data team prefer to use the corporate DHCP service as we will have PCs plugged behind the phones. As I read the blogs, it appears that I will need Option 43 on the first DHCP discover completed with the VLAN ID for the phones. The phone will restart and do another DHCP discover on the provided VLAN with Option 66 populated with the TFTP server IP. This being the Alcatel CPU IP address. The phone then requests the TFTP download and life is good. Have I interpretted the blogs correctly?

Just to remind
LLDP/MED for IP Touch sets is announced in R9.1
If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck.

Alex
Thanks for the details about R9.1 and LLDP. I'll contact my reseller and enquire about the version they have shipped. We have just received 1 x OXO and 1 x OXE.

You must put an entry in option 67 too (any text) or the phone does not get a vlan DHCP offer.
