6850-P48 GBIC not recognized

Post by manrubble »

I have a mini-GBIC-SX (SFP-GIG-SX) plugged into port 1/1 on a 6850-P48. When I 'show interfaces 1/1' XFP/SFP shows "unknown".

is there a command I need to run on the switch that will allow the port...I didn't think so...but...

6.1.3.907.R01

thanks

You have to purchase the (mini)GBIC from Alcatel-Lucent. If it is not purchased from Alcatel-Lucent, then you know the reason why it doesn't work.

Does the link come up? Try upgrading to the latest AOS release (6.3.1.1052.R01).

Alcatel switches doesn't segregate SFPs, so if you have decent modules from any vendor you can use them. Alcatel anyway, as any other major vendor is just reselling SFPs from different manufactures. As difference in price is about 10 times, normally it doesn't make sense to buy SFPs from Alcatel, because they are not better than any other module, but exactly the same - MSA specification was created to make SFP compatible and succeeded in it.
Same way you can say -- don't connect other vendor switch to Alcatel Ethernet port, it will be not supported. We have seen different problems with Alcatel hardware and software, but never any issues with SFPs.
XFP is different story, Alcatel switches require specific code to be written in modules to be accepted, but it also isn't a big problem. And generic modules are again 2-3 times cheaper and you have more choise in distances...

When you need 80km or 120 km BiDi SFPs, Alcatel has no such modules in the price-list, but you can use generic modules without any problems...
