6648 set to factory defaults without password

Post by mung »

I purchased a used 6648 and it has a password on it that I don't know. Is there a way to reset this thing to factory defaults without knowing the admin password? I have tried the instructions on this site but there is no way to break the boot. No "hit any key" comes up on boot, hitting break doesn't stop it either.

I have to believe that there is a way to reset this thing as every other piece of gear out there has some way to set it to defaults.

Thanks!

I got in. The problem was that I wasn't getting the press any key prompt because the interupt boot jumper wasn't on.

so if anyone else has this problem you need to open it up and set that jumper. I think it was the top right one if I remember correctly.

Thanks Mung, sorry it took me some time to write back.
it was a good heads up.

I bought a card reader, dropped the userTable, the boot.slot.cfg.
Put the card back in, and up & running with something like the defaults.
Still cannot get it respond to a web browser.
I sent off an email asking for the default settings to Alcatel, but they refused me web site access.
Told me to go to a dealer. (?!) these were bought off ebay.
Nice, even Cisco behaves better to humble code-cutters than that.

Summary;
if you get a chance to buy one or more of these, don't.
if you DO get one or more of these, buy a flash card reader.
not bad equipment, abysmal support.

Great forum, keep it up.

Mine is working just fine and I got it off of Ebay.

Is the web browser not working on the local lan or from another IP address range? I had a problem with not having a default route and so when I was on the same lan the web access would work but from other addresses it would not work. Put the default route in and everything was fine.

You get no response from the web interface? Or you cannot log into the web interface (rejects authentication)?

By default the web interface is not enabled. There is a aaa authentication ... command needed for this.

Baz sorry to see you had trouble with these switches. My friend and I purchased a bulk lot of 26 of these switches off ebay, fortunately though I am quite familiar with them and was able to obtain the info to restore the admin password back to default. The manuals to configure these switches are available on line and I have included the link below. If the advanced routing option has been installed on your switches then they are quite powerful and offer options such as QOS and Layer 3 routing.
To enable the WEB interface you need to modify the config by using the "aaa Authentication" command as torrentula said, while your at it do the telnet, ftp,and snmp as per below

aaa authentication telnet "local"
aaa authentication ftp "local"
aaa authentication http "local"
aaa authentication snmp "local"

You will need to also issue the "write memory" command to save your changes to the working config, and to ensure that both the "Working Config" and the "Certified Config" are the same you will need to use "copy working certified". But all these command are in the manuals, hope this helps.

Good luck
