7705 reboot after loading boot.ldr

Post by g3r »

Hopefully somebody can help me with a 7705 SAR boot/upgrade problem. I'm not too familiar with SARs so any help is much appreciated Thank you in advance!

I have a two old redundant CSM SARs all with Boot ROM X-6.1.R7 which finds and loads boot.ldr (9.0.R7) from CF card. It seems to have no issue with loading boot.ldr and starts running it but then spits out some garbled output and reboots.

I've got 4 CSM all doing the same, tried several CF cards, 128MB, 1GB 2GB, FAT, FAT32, full format vs quick etc. I tweaked bof.cfg many times but I never get a chance to break into boot process. I double checked that my serial cable is actually sending characters out, but I never get any echo or indication from the SAR that it knows I'm there. Should I be seeing my characters echo'd back?

I had only one CSM card in the shelf for this testing, all other cards and stby CSM removed. It boots, loads boot.ldr, thinks, writes some unreadable(to me) stuff to console and reboots.

It looks like the garbled output is at another baud rate, but I've set every standard baud up to 115200 hoping to be able to read that garbled out but nothing worked. I tried 7n1, odd even etc, I timed waiting through 2 reboot cylces on each setting and never got that bit of text readable.

Here is console output I see, loops over and over just like this

Here's one version of bof.cfg I tried

Code: Select all

primary-image cf3:/both.tim
primary-config cf3:/config.cfg
console-speed 115200
no auto-discover
persist off
autonegotiate
duplex full
speed 100
wait 30
Thats from when I put both.tim, support.tim, bof.cfg right in the CF top directory. I also tried with the recommended layout with both.tim inside a release directory. I tried Release 20.x files also in case my R9 boot.ldr was corrupt.

It never even gets far enough to look for a primary image or allow me to interrupt boot process. boot.ldr crashes every time and whatever it says I can't read at any baud rate.

Do I need boot.ldr from Release 6.x that matches the reported BootRom version? Or at least a closer version like 7.x?

Hello,

It looks like you've tried everything except one crucial thing. It's possible that your problem is due to an incompatibility between the versions of your firmware and your hardware. It could also be related to a serial communication problem, so make sure your serial port and cable settings are correct. Don't forget the importance of cybersecurity by keeping your firmware and configurations up to date to avoid potential vulnerabilities. Try to find a version of boot.ldr that matches your BootRom X-6.1.R7 and see if that solves the problem.

I havent seen that behaviour before..
What kind of CSM are you using? v1 or v2?
If you are using v1, SROS/TimOS 9 does not support that card, and my guess is that this includes the boot.ldr as well.
Support for CSMv1 ended in release 6.something, as far as I can tell.

Not sure if you have figured it out, but I would urge you to get matching boot.ldr / both.tim from the 6.x release, and try to boot from those files.

Good luck.
