GSM Gateways on Analogue trunks

Customer has 6 GSM Gateways attached to 6 analog trunk positions. These are all part of the same trunk group. If one of the trunks is busy the system will route to the next free trunk. In ARS if all trunks are busy the call will go to the PSTN.

Need to know if it is possible to configure the system that if one of the gateways is out of service that the PBX will pick this up and route automatically to the next working trunk or failover to PSTN as it does if the trunk is busy?

I know it probably isn't but customer used to have an ericsson MD110 and swears it could do this.......

? And how does the Ericson knew it was faulty as no signal was returned??? I don't think it is possible neither.

This is precisley the issue, I do not believe the MD 110 could do this I just think that the issue probably did not arise. As I understand it when an analogue line is out of service the exchange will give back a signal indicating this to the OXO whilst these gateways are not capable of this. Is this a safe assumption?
