Is it possible to create a VC between a 6860 and a 6865? I am getting the following error/inconsistent state:

MIS-CHASSIS-TYPE

I could not find documentation on this phrase, but it sounds to me like the two chassis are incompatible.

Not compatible, it is mentioned in the "OmniSwitch AOS Release 8 Switch Management Guide" in section 13.

VC of 6860 and 6865 is supported (specs-guide 27/01: OS6860 and OS6865 models can be mixed in Virtual Chassis."
But the 6865 does not have any dedicated VFL. So you need to configure at both switches 10g-Ports for auto-vfl.
