Intermittent FAX/ PDQ and 56K Modem issues
Hi All.
I have a query and I hope I have put this into the correct forum area.
We have a system that is made up as follows.
Originally we had 2 x A4400 Nodes installed consisting of in each area of a single M3 cabinet and a whole load of remote shelves (ACT Voice Hubs) connected back to the M3 ACT28s via INTOF (Over duplex optical fibre). Both nodes used CPU5 cards.
2 Years back we extended the areas in which we wanted to offer voice services so converted one of the 4400 nodes to allow the use of RM1 Media gateways. The CPU Cards were replaced with INTIP2 and 2 new application servers were added to the network. The New media gateways were installed around our site and connected also to the data network. We ended with a hybrid system of media gateways and ACT media gateways (Original Voice Hubs, still connected to the ACT28 via INTOF).
Voice calls work fine, we have no issues, however we get intermittent issues with using Faxes/ PDQ Machines and also 56k dial up services from the media gateways. These same devices work 100% of the time if used through the legacy Voice Hubs (act media gateways).
For information we use G711, using R6.0.1 and have a 1GbE network consisting of Alcatel 8800s and 6600-P24s. The usage of this network is very low, it supports client internet services only that we sell. Never goes anything above 100 separate feeds. All is very well segmented using VLANs.
The annoying thing is how intermittent the problem is. It is mainly with PDQ machines, and more specifically when they try to run initial setup.
Our supplier is scratching their heads and cannot find what the issue is. We are tearing our hair out as we sell telephony services to clients.
Not sure if this makes any difference but the INTIP2 cards sit in the same ACT28 as only 1 of our 5 PRA2 cards that connect to the PSTN.
Any ideas would be greatly welcome
Many Thanks

Re: Intermittent FAX/ PDQ and 56K Modem issues
short answer - need to run g711 (no compression) and keep it local (no WAN). 0% packet loss, <100ms round trip and no jitter.

Re: Intermittent FAX/ PDQ and 56K Modem issues
Thanks again.
We use G711 already, as we have enourmous capacity on our LAN we opted that compression wasnt necessary. Round trip times going to be sitting in 1-2ms range. ping -t reveals a very stable reply time. We have no WAN.
We will keep researching through the data transparency, fax over IP stuff.
