I've found the information to change the charmap for the phone's keyboard in this topic: viewtopic.php?f=266&t=14129.

> charmap set qwerty

This works but, as also stated in that topic, after a reset (hard either soft) the setting is changed back.

Is it possible to make this permanent ?

When you configure the mini mail feature, you choose the keyboard type...

I've tried that, it does not change the physical layout.
