Yes.. you can.
Minimal Version is 6.4.4 (6850E need that), so upgrade your 6850 to the same image (miniboot, bootrom, fpga .. check release notes)
Stackcables are the same (no remotestacking with sfp+ on 68950E thou)
You need to check whether the 6850E are in os6850 compatibility mode -> show stack mode
show stack mode
NI Model Name Current mode Saved mode
----+----------------+----------------+----------------
  1 OS6850E-P24X OS6850E OS6850E
  2 OS6850E-P24X OS6850E OS6850E
here they are not (OS6850E)

and set it if needed to
stack set slot 1 saved-mode os6850
stack set slot 2 saved-mode os6850
Reboot all 6850E to have the mode change recognized (or reboot entire stack.. )

(or vi boot.slot.cfg)
boot slot 1
boot mode os6850
You will loose the additional "E" Features like vrf aso, but now you have a stacked mixed of old and new switches.

I have a stack of 2 os6850's. I need to add a third switch to the stack. When I add the os6850E it does not want to sync. Any ideas on how to force a sync.

What do the console messages tell you?

Points to check:
AOS/Miniboot/FPGA Versions? A running stack with 6.4.4 will probably not work with a 6850E running 6.4.5/6.4.4
-> Downgrade according to release notes, at least same fpga version is needed

Stacking mode the same? you can't mix 6850 and 6850E, if you are running OS6850 you may need to "downgrade" the new switch

# show stack mode
NI Model Name Current mode Saved mode
----+----------------+----------------+----------------
1 OS6850-48 OS6850 OS6850

stack set slot 1 saved-mode os6850 reload

what does "show stack topology" show you?

That should be the main causes. just watch the console of the new device
