Write memory is not permitted

Post by Dimskiy » 10 Nov 2011 03:40

Hello,

We have this device and was tried to configure but when accept command "write memory" we have error:
-> write memory
ERROR: Write memory is not permitted when switch is running in certified mode

When we make save config through web then we can have a message:
"You will not be able to save configuration changes for this
switch because it is currently running the Certified software version.
Before making changes, you must reload the Working software version
to allow the changes to be saved" - and only button "ОК".

In web-interface in System>Sytem Mgmt>Images>Loaded Image Files:
We can see:
Directory Version Name Description Size Toggles table sort mode for field selection. Toggles sort direction for the table.
certified 7.2.1.353.R01 Tos.img Alcatel-Lucent OS 89295692

In web-interface in System>Sytem Mgmt>Images>Image Files In Flash:
We can see:
Directory Version Name Description Size Toggles table sort mode for field selection. Toggles sort direction for the table.
certified 7.2.1.353.R01 Tos.img Alcatel-Lucent OS 89295692
diags 7.2.1.R01_352:relman Tdiag.img Alcatel-Lucent Diag OS 23855100
working 7.2.1.353.R01 Tos.img Alcatel-Lucent OS 89295692

What we must do that we can use "write memory"?

Any idea?

Thanks.

Hi,

edited at 11.22.2011 please note the following applies to SW v6.x only.

this may happen if certified and working was not identical. Switch or NIs reboot on issuing the "takeover" or "reload" commands or after power failure or a bug and after reboot, switch started in certified.
Verify the configuration status with "show configuration status" and "show running-directory" before executing a takeover/reload......
You can now execute

Code: Select all

copy certified working
then files from certified will be copied to working, so working=certified and you will be able to "write memory" (PS. if you're sure that in certified is already your working boot.cfg)
or

Code: Select all

reload working no rollback timeout
then the switch will reboot from working with boot.cfg from working

On all my 6900 i had the problem, that on first boot the switch starts in certified.
Pretty nasty if you don't recognize and therefor start to do your 20 page config, and learn at writing that all will be gone.

You need to reboot in working with
"reload from working no rollback-timeout"
(It has changed a bit in AOS 7)

You're right, is a little different. The 7.x boots from certified like 6.x, but the software can't tell which directory to choose for comparison against the certified directory. The software keeps the current running directory as "certified". The user can remedy this at boot by using the "modify running-directory" CLI command.

Code: Select all

modify running-directory /flash/working
Tech-tip for this.

Hi all,,
thanks all for the above useful posts, please give advise if write memory is enough to save configuration or it's essential to " copy running certified,
I notice the switch boot in certified mode, how can I force it to boot in working mode ..

-> modify running-directory working
Please wait...

-> write mem

File /flash/working/vcsetup.cfg replaced.

File /flash/working/vcboot.cfg replaced.

-> sh ru

CONFIGURATION STATUS
Running CMM : MASTER-PRIMARY,
CMM Mode : VIRTUAL-CHASSIS MONO CMM,
Current CMM Slot : CHASSIS-1 A,
Running configuration : WORKING,
Certify/Restore Status : CERTIFIED
SYNCHRONIZATION STATUS
Running Configuration : SYNCHRONIZED

-> sh conf st
File configuration: none scheduled
Error file limit: 2

Running configuration and saved configuration are identical

->

It should be all in the switch management guide.. chapter 4.

Write memory will write to running directory.
In case of reboot/powerloss running and certified will not be the same -> will boot from certified.
With copy running certified you will make certified and working the same -> should boot from running in this case.
In a Stack/VC you should use "copy running certified flash-synchro" to make secondary/further CMMs also get the correct data - this will be needed in case the master fails.
