VLAN routing help

Post by wabbit »

Hi,

I'm trying to setup a new VLAN on an OmniSwitch 6850 which only has access to the internet, and not any other internal addresses.

Our router is connected to port 1 of the switch, with IP 192.168.50.254, the switch is 192.168.50.10.

We have a couple of internal ranges- 192.168.50.0/24 (VLAN 5), 192.168.51.0/24 (VLAN 2), 192.168.52.0/24 (VLAN 3), 192.168.54.0/24 (VLAN 4)

I have setup a new VLAN 6, with 172.0.0.0/24 addresses and 172.0.0.10 as the gateway, and added port 1 and port 48 to this VLAN. Connecting a laptop to this port and setting manual IP config means that I can connect and ping all IP addresses internally, but no external addresses.

Networking is not one of my strengths, so I'm hoping someone can help!

Thanks.

hi,
I think you should use "NAT" here. But OS 6850 doesn't support "NAT".

Does your router support "RIP" routing?

If yes,You can config RIP on OS6850 and your router.

I think it will solve this problem.

what kind of router do you have connected on port 1? I am guessing you have layer 3 interfaces configured for each of you vlans? Being that all your address space here is private, you are attempting to communicate with public ranges for external access and that is where you need the NAT?

Thanks for your replies.

Unfortunately the router (Cisco 1841) is managed by our ISP so we don't have much we can do there. Sounds like what we would like to do may not be possible in our current setup...

not sure if i understand but if you just want another vlan with 172.0.0.0/24 range then you dont nee to add it to port 1 on the 6850. when you do that then you will need the vlan added to the router with a 172 address.
