Procedure below not works?

When "grub" prompt available:

root (hd0,4)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda5 console=ttyS0,9600 panic=5 single init=/bin/bash
boot

init-2.05b# mount -o remount,rw /
init-2.05b# passwd
New UNIX password:
Retype new UNIX password:

if you have a backup,you can restore all data. when restoring linux (ip and passwords) dont say yes for password restore.
