VMAIL outbound calls

I see calls in the log that show they originated by VMAIL. knee-jerk me says they are a compromised system making spoofed calls. What is another more likely scenario?

networked voicemail passing a message from one system to another, voicemail owner requested notification on cell phone when there is a new voicemail, etc..
