In the 1980’s there was a popular TV show in the US called Knight Rider. The show’s premise was that the hero had a sentient car as his sidekick. The car was a Pontiac Trans Am and had lots of James Bond types of gizmos in it, but its main feature was that it could talk to the driver, independently reason and think and help get the hero out of trouble. The car was sort of like Robin Hood’s sidekick Little John but with four wheels, 500 horsepower under the hood and a better sound system. At the time it all seemed like science fiction from quite far into the future. Amazingly, cars these days are getting pretty close to this. A typical car today has an operating system in it that controls the steering, suspension, brakes, and acceleration along with a host of other functions. The system is typically a network of interconnected electrical control units that use roughly 100M lines of code (a 787 Dreamliner uses only 6.5M lines of code). While not yet sentient, cars are getting pretty close with systems that can parallel park for you, check your tire pressure, know when to turn on the lights or the windshield wipers or even figure out that you’ve had one too many and shouldn’t be driving anything, anywhere, anytime soon. For quite some time now cars have had wireless CDMA cellular links that let you call for help if you need it or let the car tell the dealer that it needs an oil change so that they can pester you endlessly about it.

Energy is on everyone’s mind — government officials, utilities and consumers alike. Issues abound on how to conserve it, produce it more efficiently, keep it secure and find increasingly sustainable sources of it. These are complex issues, but systemic to managing our future of energy production and consumption. There has been much headway made in this area, with innovative technologies being developed and deployed to yield results. For example, there are new communications systems that no longer require a technician to physically go to an oil well to check on production and flow issues, saving time and money.Alcatel-Lucent continues to be at the forefront of this issue with several recently announced wins in the Energy Strategic Industry. The latest success is with Washington Gas [read Alcatel-Lucent's press release], where we have been selected to build their new communications network starting this summer. This new network, utilizing our comprehensive leading Internet Protocol/Multiprotocol Label Switching (IP/MPLS) solution, will link Washington Gas' operations throughout Washington D.C. and the surrounding area, serving more than one million residential, commercial and industrial customers.

There is no doubt an unprecedented shift is happening toward 2.0 that is causing ripples throughout an evolving ecosystem and value chain. To gain a better understanding of what was happening in the industry, Christina James and I decided to explore the changes by writing The Shift: The Evolving Market, Players and Business Models in a 2.0 World. It has been an interesting and eye opening experience. Given the speed of the change, there was no way to include everything we discovered. For those of you who have seen the book, you probably noticed the tsunami of primary and secondary statistics pointing to new shifts in the ecosystem. That’s why Christina and I decided to start a blog to pick up the story.
